A strange calculation

Stephen Wolfram published his first physics paper at age sixteen, published nine more before finishing his undergraduate degree, and only bothered to learn the multiplication tables after age forty.

What is most surprising about that is: He did bother to memorise the multiplication tables in middle age.

What benefit did he hope to gain, that he was ok to go without for decades?
