Completing joy
Epicurus suggested that the chief outcome of life is to have more and more joy, fun, pleasure.
An easy thing to do: Get wildly drunk, overeat, binge all the TV you can. Contracting in every moment to the narrowest pleasure extraction possible.
There is an elegant end to his suggestion: “… over a lifetime”.
There is a feeling of reaching into all future moments and asking how this moment is adding to those. It is a feeling that completes a moment, connecting it to the next.
When moments complete in this way, I feel I am having more joy in my life.
