How to do values

My granddad valued respect. Deeply and with conviction. I got that from him - I too value respect.

As a kid to respect my granddad was simple "be seen, but don't be heard". That is what kids were supposed to do.

In his house was a formal sitting room. Once a ball I was playing with rolled in there, and I was dead scared to enter that room. Because that would have disrespected his wishes.

This is not how I want to do respect with the kids in my life.

Shared values, different expressions.

I find it useful to ask "how can I do respect for you?". The answers always surprise me.
