Marshall Rosenberg has this suggestion: Turn every "I must" into an "I choose to, because ...".
You must not do a thing.
You can choose all the things you want to do.
Often the "because" bottoms out at "... because I want to survive" — an extremely valid choice.
Sometimes there is no "because", and stopping doing the thing is sensible.
If a thing does not answer the essential problems, then why are we doing it?
