Performing facilitator

At a small voluntary group one night, I saw a facilitator perform the role.

Their specific skill is fomenting disagreement. Then reaching agreement with most of the group, and planting the seeds of dissent into the future, to allow for growth and future feedback. It was elegant to watch as it unfolded.

What struck me is this: They were not asked to do this. It was not group that wanted facilitating. They chose to be in the group.

By performing the role of facilitator they exited the group. I wonder what they gained by doing this.

I wonder what I gain when I do this.
