Polite

Polite comes from "to make smooth, to polish".

To be polite is to take what is rough and hard to smooth it over.

It is admirable and important way of being in a world with sharp edges and hard things to deal with.

When what you are smoothing is yourself for the benefit of other's comfort: Then I question whether being polite is helpful or harmful.
