Small differences
When three people start a town: They will open two schools, three churches, and five liquor shops.
From the outside, everything in town will look pretty much the same. Except to the people that make the differences: For them, those differences matter.
And they will fight tooth and nail to maintain the difference - there is a reason they open up so many liquor shops.
This Freudian "narcissism of small differences" is highly comical. And dangerous. And important.
The differences may be small, but the emotional effect is great and bitter.
What affects people, is what affects them.
