Structural assumptions
Born and bred in Berlin she celebrates many winters with Glühwein and snow.
She visits the Southern Hemisphere in winter.
A town where the tar road sometimes melts in summer. Winter means we sometimes throw on the one jacket at the back of the dresser.
For the first time in her life: She feels cold and miserable. She spent a week trying and failing to feel warm.
My assumption was that cold-country-person equals cold-adapted-person.
What I missed is that cold-country adapted in structural ways: Central heating, double glazed windows, and insulation is a given there. Feeling cold is not.
Separating someone from the environment they are from is hard.
Realising my unconscious biases about that environment is harder still.
