Teaching vocabulary

At a wine course, the instructor in the opening lecture says this: "I am going to help you develop a dictionary, for what you already like".

I think of this often when I have the urge to inflict teachings on people.

Am I teaching them what I like, or do I have the opportunity to hand them a dictionary by which they can explore more what they like?
