The story is not for the new people

Groups are formed and strengthened around the stories they tell. New people joining the group will hear these stories.

Those stories are not for them. The stories are for the existing members. The ones who have heard it before, who identify, and relearn why they have chosen to belong here.

A new member becomes an existing member based on the coherence of the stories that are told. A group gains coherence in the retelling of the stories.
