Touchstone people

A touchstone first was a black stone with a fine-grained surface. Gold and silver are rubbed onto the stone, where it will leave a mark.

The quality of the metal can be judged from that streak.

Touchstone people are the people leave a mark on. And from that mark we get we get to judge our own character.
