What needs be true

A question I learned: "What needs to be true for this to be true?"

When someone says or does something that makes no sense to me, I reach for this question.

Which values, worldviews, and experiences do this person bring with them?
What beliefs, concerns, and history are they carrying into what they are saying?

It is a question that rarely generates answers but always generates more questions to ask and ways to explore.
